Mabon is the Autumnal Equinox, Like Ostara it is a time of perfect balance between light and darkness, but this time it is the darkness that is growing. Mabon is a harvest festival. This is the closing, the end of the harvest. In ancient times, this was the time when the peasants settled their debts with their creditors. Both equinoxes are times of balance, but Mabon is a time of rebalancing, of putting things right again. The harvest is in and it's time to see what we have in stock. Giving thanks is not only being grateful, but it also requires appraisal and contemplation. The symbol of the grain, so important during Lughnassadh, is still applicable during Mabon. Although, it is not a glorious celebration of abundance. Life slows down and more attention is given to the idea of death and rebirth.
